Yes, you can sell it
There is no rule against selling a car without a valid MOT. What changes is how it is used and moved. A car with no current MOT generally cannot be driven on a public road, so a buyer will collect it on a transporter rather than drive it away.
Tell us about the MOT position when you ask for an offer at /vehicle-valuation. The valuer prices the car with the work it needs in mind, so there are no surprises later.
What the law says about driving it
Without a valid MOT you can usually only drive a car on the road to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs booked after a failure. If the MOT failed with a dangerous defect, the car must not be driven at all until that defect is fixed, even if the old certificate has not yet run out.
A car without an MOT also cannot be taxed, and an untaxed car kept on the road can be fined. If it is staying put while you sell, keep it off the road.
A dangerous defect means the car should not be driven at all. Do not drive it to a buyer. Collection on a transporter is the safe and legal way.
SORN, if the car is off the road
A Statutory Off Road Notification, or SORN, tells DVLA the car is kept off the public road, for example on a drive or in a garage. It stops the car needing tax while it is not being used. A car on SORN can still be sold, and the new keeper takes it from there. We handle the DVLA paperwork for the sale.
Read the failure sheet before you decide
The MOT result lists failures, and sometimes advisories. Some failures are small, such as a bulb, a wiper blade or a tyre, and are worth fixing if the car is otherwise sound. Others are larger, such as corrosion, brake work or suspension parts, and may not be worth paying for before a sale.
There is no single right answer. If a repair costs less than the difference it makes, it may be worth doing. If it does not, selling as it is can make more sense. Ask for an offer as the car stands, and you can decide with real figures in front of you.
Be open about what is wrong
The easiest sale is an honest one. Send the failure sheet, or tell us what it says, and mention anything else you know about, such as a warning light or a noise. The price holds if the vehicle is as described. Any change is explained first, and you can say no.
MOT history, including past failures and advisories, is public and can be checked online by anyone with the registration, so a buyer will see it anyway.
Older, high mileage and non-running cars
A failed MOT is common on older Toyotas, and age alone does not rule a car out. Hybrids, diesels and pickups often have trade and export demand even with work needed. If the car does not run at all, say so; it changes how it is collected, not whether it can be sold. For cars at the very end of their life, there is also /scrap-my-vehicle.
How collection and payment work
We call ahead before we collect and arrange a transporter if the car cannot be driven. We handle the DVLA paperwork. Paid in full by bank transfer before your vehicle leaves. The full steps are on /how-it-works, and our free /vehicle-health-check shows the MOT history for any reg.
